Question 05 Gas Tanks

Question for all Canadian 05 owners - have you had problems with your gas tank? Based on what I read, the gas tank problem is pretty common and I had asked my dealer about this before I bought my 05. He said the gas tanks weren't a problem in Canada (I still have the email he sent me saying this). Needless to say, I had the gas tank problem within a week of getting my 05GT. I had the tank replaced and I'm now having the same problem with my new tank. I'm taking it in on Saturday. My dealer spoke with Ford engineering about it and engineering told them that the right replacement tank was installed. So, they're now thinking it's the nozzle and not the tank. I'm just so frustrated with it right now and I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. If they don't fix it this time, I'm asking for my money back and putting it towards a GT500.

While I have your attention, I'm having two other problems - tell me if you've experienced the same or if you know what's causing the problem:

1. Rattling under the car. I'm hoping this is just the missing screws on the transmission plate (another common problem, but one which can be easily remedied).

2. My engine is randomly making noise - it sounds like a short burst of air being released and I have no idea what this could be. My car is stock - absolutely no mods. Any thoughts?

Ford has a TSB out on it. It's a ventilation issue in the tank. When trying to pump gas, gas spills out and often won't let me fill the tank. It's as if the tank thinks it's full when it's not. I have to pump really slow just to fill it up and a lot of spray-back.

Actually it happened to me. I have only filled it once so far and it seemed fine up until the very top when a gusher shot out. I guess I should take to the dealer?

I would take it in. While you're there, get them to check your transmission plate and make sure no screws are missing from it.

Thanks. So it was not the fuel tank or was it the filler neck that was the problem I have a 5 speed gt. Does this matter with the tranny? Might have to wait until thursday, chance of rain tommorrow.

Had a look at one of the '05's up close on a hoist... looks like a design problem to me, its a "saddle" tank that runs over top of the driveshaft like an upside down U..its much further forward .. in front of the spare actually.

Probably fills one side then equalizes with the other side somehow.. Looks to me if you try to use full pressure from the gas pump, the tanks can't equalize quick enough.

Your right on Bob!!!
That's what I noticed too!
I don't think Ford will really solve the problem till they re-design the tank somehow!!

It's a vent problem not a tank problem, Lincoln LS and Tbirds have had this style tank forever.

Man, I hope you guys are wrong. If this is something they can't fix, I'm gonna get my money back (no matter how much I love this car).

To answer Paul's questions, mine is also a 5spd manual. the first time i took it in they replaced the gas tank with a new tank approved by ford engineering. the dealer service centre spoke with ford engineering and engineering told them not to replace the tank again because it's likely not the problem. they think it may be the filler neck because apparently there's some ventilation issue with the neck as well. I'll let you know after I talk to them. If you go talk to your dealer, make sure you find out whether you have the newer gas tank in it. If you do, then have them check the filler neck.
