Changing timing and water pump gaskets

Changing timing and water pump gaskets

Need of your experiences.

My Mustang needs the following work done:

1. Water pump gasket and maybe water pump
2. Crank Seal
3. Timing cover gasket

While you were doing this is there anything worth doing. ie. Underdrive Pullies?

well I find that using an RTV silicone sealant on the gaskets when installing the water pump adds a little insurance in making sure it never leaks. Also If you have the underdirve pullies then yes, install them while you are doing this, its kind of like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Its also a good time so do some cooling system maintence, since changing the waterpump requires draing the fluid, change your thermostat also (if it hasn't been changed, or atleast for a while its better to do preventitive maintence now then having to drain the coolant after when the thermostat fails)

^I'd do the t/stat and water pump, but I never put silicone on gaskets, unless there's a seam. The timing chain should be OK with 180-they're usually good to 300k-ish. Just be careful not to damage the oil pan gasket as it will leak after if there's even a small tear in it (assuming it's rubber, if it's cork-you'll be OK with some silicone).

Should I change the timing from stock 10 to ??.

Does that really make that much of a difference?

Slight difference, I usually run at 14deg. but every car is different. Some need premium fuel to counter spark knock, none of my 3 last ones did though.
