exhaust and emissions 1993 5.0L

ok, so after barking up the wrong tree with my timing, i think i have the appropriate question. why does my exhaust fumes burn my eyes? before i go for an e test, i'd like to solve this, as i'm pretty sure it should not be this way. but first, what i have, and what i have found.

160 degree t stat was in the car, and it was running really cold all the time. fixed that, put in a 195. i did hear that running it too cold will cause it to run too rich.

vacuum lines, found a couple broken ones, fixed.

new coil, cap and rotor. taylor 9mm wires come in tomorrow. i bought new plugs, as the ones in the car are motorcraft platinum, and gaps so big i could drive thru them.

exhaust is complete, shorty headers, stock down pipes, 4 cats, flow master mufflers, stock drinking straw tailpipes.

electric fan, comes on when needle is just above halfway on the stock gauge, and shuts off when its just below.

so, aside form some cosmetics, thats all that is done prior that i know of, and done by me.

if something above rings a bell, let me know.

one question i have is, depending on how long homeboy was running the 160 stat, would that have killed any o2 sensors? should i just change them? i am assuming there is 4 of them? should i just hope that changing my plugs and wires will do it? i took the car for fuel today, was about a 10 min each way drive. still had water coming out the tailpipes after.

any help would be appreciated as always. thank you

jeff

now, to update, i was doing some reading, and after i changed my stat, and got my temps to where they should be, i never really drove it except today to get fuel. from what i read, i should have purged the KAM from the EEC by removing the ground wire, and turning on the headlights, the load completely draining the KAM. wasnt sure if this was snake oil or not, but did it, and took it for the recommended 10 mile chew.upon returning, i noticed that there is minimal exhaust smell, nothing like before, and barely any moisture coming out of the exhaust. when i drove it to get fuel earlier, i still had quite a bit of moisture in the exhaust.

i'm thinking of doing O2 sensors anyways. it cant hurt. i really want to get this thru an e test the right way if i can. that whole sense of accomplishment thing.

you are on the right path, when changing O2's pull the old ones and go to ford with them. They changed between the year 1987-1995.

moisture in the exhaust is a normal thing for vehicles taking consecutive short trips. need to take it out for a 30-45 minute drive to burn all of the moisture out of the exaust. Check to make sure you installed the correct spark plugs for the vehicle and that your base timing is set to the stock specification. You can try cleaning the O2 sensors by running the engine lean for 2 mins at high idle.

put new copper core motorsport plugs in from ford dealer, gapped at .045. dealer said .054, but a lot of reading shows .045 works better. base timing is 10 degrees. i am gonna run this tank of gas out of it, and in the spring, fresh tank of 87, oil change, and when i get to the re test, pull the spout.

i think theres only 2 o2 sensors, if you are going to replace them.couldn't hurt.
