rebuilding costs

ran a compression test on my car last night b/c it has felt gutless for awhile and is smoking very badly, this is what i came up with across the board
#1 80psi
#2 65psi
#3 112psi
#4 120psi
#5 100psi
#6 125psi
#7 112psi

now my question is what a rebuild cost?....i pretty much want all new gaskets and seal (valve seals, head gasket, rings, etc etc done.....the motors a carbed 306, also do you think it would b worth it to stroke it to a 331 ,347 etc?.......and would it cost much more do you think?.......iv had several motors rebuilt but with my family mechanic who always did it for beans, but has since sold his shop and moved on....

That's odd!!! How many K are on that motor? I just had the heads off mine last weekend, she's got over 315,000Km on her now, and all the crosshatching was still in the cylinders, no ring ridge, nothing, like new in there. I haven't done a compression test yet, but since the car runs mint, I don't think its in need of one........Strange how some wear and some don't, as mine is the second one I've seen with the crosshatching still present.

Don't cheap out on rings and bearings, if you can get the rebuild work done for a good price, invest the extra money in good parts.

Its not that easy to ask that question. You have to take a lot more into consideration. Which heads and intake are you running? Cam? Exhaust? I would recommend a 331 stroker over a 347. It also seems that Beatty and Woods have been experiencing some problems lately. I would go to Paul at PSP for a nice engine build, he's got tons of stroker experience. Personally, I like a nice long rod 306 over a stroker. If I were to go stroker I'd go with something small like a 317 or so. Give me a detailed description of the rest of the parts on your motor and maybe you can have a reliable and budget conscious 306 that still hauls ***.

Post I would say

for your basic rebuild I would say 1200 bucks.. thats if most parts can be re-used and the block does not need bored out and new pistons are needed.. ect...

I just got done building my DSS 331.. for cost difference.. its a big difference.. lots of hidden costs with doing a stroker.. certain things like new flywheel.. matched to the balanced weight of the stroker kit like 28oz.. need some good heads if ya wanna make some good power.. upper and lower intakes.. the stroker kit it self....the list goes on..

What kind of power are you looking for and how much cash are you wanting to spend?

Just because one person on this board had an issue, unless you know something else, doesnt mean they have issues. My engine was done professionally and with care. Believe me I stopped in to see them and take pics every step, because i wanted to for my records. The little extras they did on the block and balancing were awesome and very top notch.
I am all for each one of us supporting our own shop, but again unless you know all the details.................
BtW i agree for the street a 331 is much better than a 347.

thats right! when u get your motor built make sure u can watch the steps when they do it... if anyone ever buy short blocks/ long blocks... that are inhouse builds from a big motor company be aware... make sure u check everything!!! When production gets high... quality goes out the window.. well all know this.. so just becareful no one wants a new motor that breaks shortly after getting it... many High Performance motors also do not have any warranty
