John Kahrs' 1965 Ford Mustang 2+2
John Kahrs'
1965 Mustang 2+2
Town: Bloomingburg
Color: Cobalt Blue Pearl
Mileage: 103,400
Value: This week or last week's value? I really don't know. Hopefully, just under what it is insured for.
Under the hood: The original 289 block. The engine has been balanced, blueprinted, ported and polished. Aluminum radiator, flywheel, water pump, valve covers and heads. The engine is topped with an Edelbrock intake and a Holley 650 CFM carburetor.
Origin: The car is one of the first 1,000 fastbacks off the line in San Jose, Calif. The car has been in the family for about 34 years. I am the fourth owner.
Special features: The car is 95 percent original. All the sheet metal, bumpers, mirrors, glass, trim and light covers are original. They have been rechromed or painted but are original. The suspension has been modified to Shelby specifications for the 1965 Shelby GT350. The interior is medium-blue. All the vinyl is original. The headliner, dash pad and carpet have been replaced. Seat belts have been added to the rear so I can take the kids with me to cruises or ice cream.
Favorite place to cruise: Anyplace where there are a lot of classic muscle cars and plenty of stories to go with them
Favorite cruise music: Doesn't matter. I can't hear music in this car.
Dream car: 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
Other ride: GMC Yukon XL Denali. Nothing "green" about either car. Sorry!
What bugs you about other drivers? Driving while distracted. People need to pay attention to their driving.
Any embarrassing moments? I did a burnout in front of some friends and ran out of gas. I had to push the car into the driveway myself.
On which make and model did you learn to drive? I passed my road test in a 1974 Pontiac Catalina Grand Safari station wagon.
Vanity plate: My plate is an original plate from 1965.
Other: It's amazing, the number of people who don't understand that the car has never been restored. It's been maintained its whole life. A couple of color changes since the original Caspian Blue off the assembly line, but never any rust. It's close to show quality, but I'd rather be out driving it.
