2011 Ford Mustang GT500 specs and video teaser
Mustang fans have already had their share of fun with the unveiling of the new 3.7-liter 305 horsepower V6 along with its 5.0-liter 412 pony big brother – but now we have some teasers for the 2011 GT500 as well. Although the next range topper for the Mustang line won’t get the new 5.0 found in the GT, it does gain an aluminum version of the supercharged 5.4-liter it already enjoyed.
Ford has long taken criticism for its rather anemic powerplants – especially the ones it offered in its so-called muscle car. Now, for 2011, feeling the pressure of the Camaro breathing down its neck, Ford has finally upped the ante and brought out some new engines to give the Blue Oval crowd something to brag about.
For the range-topping GT500, the iron-block 5.4-liter is replaced with a lighter aluminum block with the same displacement. The weight savings should help the GT500 in most areas of performance – such as acceleration, stopping distance and overall lateral grip and handling. This change was much needed because the lighter and more nimble – and less expensive – Mustang GT was showing an advantage over its big brother.
Based on what we can see in the leaked brochures, GT500 shoppers will be able to choose a new Race Red, along with a new Silver Metallic color – replacing older versions of the same colors. Like the GT and V6 versions of the 2011 ‘Stang, the GT500 also gains minor tweaks to the front fascia and rear bumper, a coiled Cobra badge on the grille and fenders, a functional vented aluminum hood, a new rear spoiler, additional tire size options, changes to the Shaker 500 and 1000 systems, optional glass roof on the coupe for the first time and standard HID headlamps.
Ford has also put together a teaser video ahead of the complete unveiling set for this coming Monday – be sure to check back for new pictures and information.
Another big change is the addition of the SVT performance package, as found in the leaked brochure. The SVT performance package will provide a 3.73 limited slip rear axle, uniquely tuned springs and shocks, unique 19-inch front wheels and 20×9.5-inch rear wheels with Z-rated tires. These changes should provide for a similar upgrade to the Track Pack now offered on the Mustang GT.
The performance package also provides for cosmetic changes to the stripes, a unique gearshift **** and a spoiler with a Gurney flap.
We expect to see the 2011 GT500 show up at the New York International Auto Show in April.
