Steve Saleen’s 2011 SMS 302 Mustang Debuts!

It was a year ago that Steve Saleen showed the rendering of what would become his SMS Supercars Mustang at the big 45th Anniversary Celebration in Birmingham. It would be the first custom Mustang Steve would offer with his new company since he launched the operation in 2008.

Today on the eve of the Mustang’s 46th birthday a smiling and proud Steve Saleen pulled the cover off the new 2011 SMS 302 Mustang. Based on the all new 5.0 liter Mustang GT chassis, the SMS 302 will begin production in about a month. Steve stated at today’s reveal that a number of cars have already been ordered.

Steve Saleen’s new Mustang comes with an all new look that is modern yet pays homage to his long standing brand and style. Veteran Saleen designer Phil Frank described the chiseled front fascia with functional brake cooling ducts, sculptured side skirts, composite hood and concave rear panel as being aerodynamically functional yet muscular in shape. The rear fascia wraps around a custom molded set of exhaust tips. The look is indeed fresh and looks very well integrated with the Mustang’s lines.

The new SMS 302 will be available in both coupe and convertible. There will be two model designations starting with the naturally aspirated 5.0 liter SMS 302 4V. With a sweet massage here and there, the SMS 302 4V will produce 440hp and about 400 lb-ft of torque. Mods will include under-drive pulleys, high-flow exhaust, intake and SMS Calibration.

For those wanting more, Steve Saleen is offering the SMS 302 SC which adds their hot new SMS 296 supercharger system, pumping power to just over 535hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The new supercharger system uses a highly efficient “six-pack” intercooler and Lysholm compressor that allows a lower boost level, and thus lower operating temperatures. It is a beautiful piece of machinery to look at and it has a sound all its own.

Saleen says that 2011 SMS 302 4V will accelerate from 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds and pass the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at a speed of 116 mph. The SMS 302SC numbers are even more impressive with a 4.3 second 0-60 and a quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at 119 mph.

Underneath is an SMS S4 High Performance Suspension, with “S4″ specific springs, struts, front and rear anti-roll bars with high durometer bushings. Best of all, SMS replaces the Mustang’s factory panhard rod with an all-new SMS Watts Link set up. Pirelli PZero High Performance 275/35ZR 20 tires are wrapped around 20” x 9” wheels at the front and 275/40ZR 20 tires on 20” x 10” wheels at the rear. Cross drilled rotors, powder coated Calipers and high performance racing pads complete the brake system.

Inside is a custom leather and Alcantara interior with the SMS Chevron designs in the seating surfaces. An SMS 200 mph speedometer, custom badging, door sill plates, leather-wrapped billet aluminum shift **** and leather wrapped steering wheel complete the picture.

Like in the past customers can opt for some really striking custom colors including Burnout Black, Tire Smoke White, Sour Grape Green, Plum Insane, Pineapple Express Yellow and Maliblue to name a few. Customers can further personalize their car’s interior in matching colors for the seat Signature Series chevrons and stitching if so desired.

Steve also had to drop a hint about another top-end SMS Mustang to come late this year. He gave a wry smile and said it will be called the SMS 351X. “With even more horsepower than the SMS 302SC, this supercharged beast will be the pinnacle performer of any production Mustang,” said Saleen.

And if you need one sooner, Steve will be building a short run of 2010 SMS 460 Mustangs in the coming month. In fact we saw a few Mustangs at the plant getting ready for their transformation. There will only be 25 built and Steve says they are already sold to dealers.

Steve Saleen will also be signing each of the cars as they roll off the line. Which leads us to an important fact to point out. There remains much confusion in the market as to what is and what is not a real “Saleen” because of the fact that corporate conglomerate MJ Acquisitions bought the remains of the old Saleen Inc. from Hancock Park in 2008. That Michigan company is marketing their own “Saleen” Mustang. Steve had long left the old company before this and has now launched his new company SMS Supercars. Steve points out with both purpose and pride that cars from SMS are the only real ” Saleens”.

“Our line of SMS Mustangs will be the only Mustangs authorized to bear my name, to use the benefit of my heritage and to incorporate performance innovations derived from my over thirty years of racing and manufacturing experience. With the extensive design, development, manufacturing, certification and warranty coverage that we put into each vehicle, the government agencies all recognize SMS as the manufacturer of record for these cars”, says Saleen.

After spending time with Steve Saleen touring the SMS Supercars facility and viewing the steady production of the SMS Challenger 570 models, and the line where the SMS 302 Mustangs will soon be built we can’t help but agree. Now we wait patiently for the opportunity to take Steve Saleen’s newest baby for a test drive!

MSRP for the new line of SMS Mustangs:

SMS 302 4V Mustang Coupe $ 54,990.00

SMS 302 4V Mustang Convertible $ 59,990.00

SMS 302 SC Mustang Coupe $ 64,990.00

SMS 302 SC Mustang Convertible $ 69,990.00

No kidding - not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. He knows what he's doing though. Every car that leaves his shop, Saleen or SMS, is beautiful.
