Instructions For Installing 03 Cobra Tank/Pumps Into A GT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heres instructions just as the title states. Hope this helps anyone and everyone wanting to do this, and may save you some time with a step by step system from someone who recently had the experience.
1) Make sure the tank is 1/4 full or less than Jack Car up under the differential or where ever. Make sure both rear wheels are off the ground and get it up pretty high since ya gotta drop the tank and have room to get it out.
2) On the Rear of the tank (closest to the inside of the rear bumper cover) there is a male/female connection. Unhook it..
3) Next you can get ac line/fuel line disconnect tools and disconnect the fuel line on the front of the tank from the fuel filter. Do this to both ends and just remove the fuel filter since you'll want a new one anyways. There are gonna be clips on each end of the line pry it off the a screwdriver before disconnecting, remember how they went on. You will reuse them.
4) Now the wire harness is actually attached to the tank by clips. Grab a screwdriver and pry them off, keep them for the new tank. After that the wire loom will be free from the tank.
5) Next order of business will be the 2 braces that retain the tank in it's position. Can't remember the exact size socket but undue the braces (one will completely be removed, and the other will hang on a hing). There is a "bucket that hold the tank" this will come off once the braces are removed. Make sure you have jack stands under the driver's side part of the tank. This will be the most heavy and the right side will still be supported by the fill tube. If you want to be safe put one on the right as well.
6) Lower the tank onto the stands a fair ways and look at the top of the tank from the REAR of the car. You will see where the (2) blue canisters on the passenger side are connected to the fuel line. There is a clip that holds the tube onto the canister tube. I pryed this off (you can buy them at any autoparts store)and then pulled the tube off. The canisters have a "Y" shape to them. The top two points of the "Y" are connected to the "small" and "large" canister. The bottom *single point is where you need to disconnect it.
7) From there the only connection that will still be on the tank is the fill tube (may be another next to that held on with removeable clip. May only be 2000's :shrug I moved the passenger side Stand since I had to lay exactly where it was. The driver side can stay to help stabalize the tank while you play tug-of-war with it. The fill tube is actually alot longer then one would believe. You will have to pull the tube(fairly hard, a PITA) while pushing the opposite way with the tank. Pull the tube towards the passenger side and push the tank towards the driver side. Kind of a balancing act but don't worry you'll eventually get it out.
8) Once the fill tube is out you should then be able to drop the tank completely and pull it out of under the car. From there I installed the 03 cobra pumps into the 03 tank. Make sure the "floater is facing the passenger side of the tank. There will be a notch cut when you look inside and that is where the floater "bar" will go. You will have to angle the pumps while you put them in, the white filter/pads on the bottom are pliable so go ahead and manipulate them if you need to.
9) Removed the stock fuel pump screws on the old tank and transfer them to the new tank. Tighten well enough but DO NOT strip the bolts.
10) Now go ahead and removed the "Stock" fuel line from the "stock" fuel pump and transfer it to the new tank/pumps.
11) From there comes the most difficult and important part of this process. The 2 blue (small and large) canisters must be removed from the stock tank and transferred to the new. I removed the small canister first using a flat headed screw drive, lubricant and prying up VERY SLOWLY on each side little by little, make sure you alternate. Once you get the small canister out it will allow you to have more moveablilty on the large one. If you are having trouble slowly and gently turn the canisters side to side like a dial on a watch. Now this was the most difficult part (at least for me). The LARGE canister is in there VERY tightly. You will do the exact same thing as you did with the smaller one but please GO SLOWLY and be very careful. If it takes ya 20 minutes it takes ya 20 minutes, you don't want to break this.... Use lubricant and I also found it easier by using 2 screwdrivers at once, one on each side as to give equal lift and pressure on the canister. Also word from experience, try not to place the screwdrivers where the lip of the canister is pliable AS IT WILL BREAK. I know from experience. Luckily they fit so tightly it did not negetively effect it, just be careful.
12) Almost done! From here, install the stock canisters into the new tank. I did the small first and the large second. The large is difficult and one way courtesy of 68 & 00 is take a rag and wad it on top of the canister and lightly tap the top with a mallet (wood or rubber, I wouldn't use a metal one) alternation from side to side and it will eventually go in. I just pushed really hard with my hand directly on the top center of the canister. May not be best way but it worked. Do whatever you feel is best.
13) From there your ready to get this thing back up in the car. Go ahead and slide the tank under the car. The first thing I did was push the fill tube in. This is basically just following the previous instructions backwards. With the fill tube in this will give you much support to get all the connections back together.
14) Then take the "Y" from the 2 canisters and reconnect it to the fuel line thats connected to the undercarriage. Use a clip similar to the one which was removed. I used one that tightens/loosens with a screwdriver and tightened it fairly tight.
15) From here put the new fuel filter in make sure the word "flow" on the filter is facing the driver side of the car. Connect the stock fuel line connected to the fuel pump to the fuel filter.
16) With a 2000 GT I had to cut off the male connection on the new cobra pumps and the old cobra pumps and swap them. May be different for different years. Only 3 wires need to be cut. Connect the wire loom to it's previous state.
17) Next, re-connect the wire loom, with the clips attached to the tank. Now you are ready to hoist it back up and just about done.
18) Put the tank basket underneath the car and begin to hand screw the bolts to tighten them. Once you have started them by hand go ahead and grab your wrench and socket and have at it. Make sure they're tight.
19) Ready for this........ YOU SHOULD BE DONE!!! Don't forget to add some gas, I put about 2 gallons in. You can do more if you would like, go filler up and make sure the fuel guage reads full. Your set and enjoy the ability to have alot more safety and support ALOT more horsepower then you could before.
