The trani may take less than or equal to 4L but it is the process in which they do it that requires 16L. They will use a evac circulation system (machine) that they will have to empty, then fill with your royal purple trani fluid. They then connect the hoses to your trani flow tubes and run the machine circulating clean fluid and old until clean fluid is present in the out flow tube or sump bin of the machine. So yes it will be expensive swap.

Your transmission may only hold 4 liters in the pan however with the torque converter. lines and cooler and such I would expect 12 or so liters is it's capacity. With a full flush of the system draining your old and adding a completely new type of fluid that is why they are quoting so much fluid. The fluid flushing machine will also hold a couple of liters almost of the new fluid and some goes to waste pushing the old fluid out until it runs clear and the old dirty stuff is gone.

It is possible they quoted you 4 liters for a "pan change" which is often done (drain the pan and add new) but if you are flushing it all (converter and so on) then 16 is not far out of range.

Is it possible to just switch whats in the pan to synthetic or does the entire system need to be switched?

No you have to flush it all out and start fresh. Pan drain after that. Your car is getting old so you may as well treat it to a fluid flush anyway regardless which fluid you use.

Don't feel that way, that is what you were told but it was a misunderstanding. At least you flushed it with new fluid and it does not have to be synthetic. Good luck at what must be the hun footers. I want to go myself but there is a bit of a scheduling issue with my wifes birthday party. The Big 50.
