turn my 3.8 to a 351 windsor?

does anyone know what i would have to do for that swap?...what i would need for parts....and difficulty level ???

any help would be good because i can get a REALLY good deal on an older 351 that would make a good rebuild...just wondering if it would be a good engine to put into my v6 mustang.....its carbed and so on...holley carb on it right now...its a 72ish year engine

i know i would have to do suspension work....get a new transmission...motor mounts...new hood....need a 8.8inch rear end....

any help would be amazing since i am doing all the work myself and with a buddy of mine over the winter....so the sooner the information comes..the better !

thanks ahead of time

i have decided to stay v6 ... i just love it to much haha

but i have a quick question....if i got a really good deal on a 95 v6 with 5spd tranny would that be a good way to go about it ?....do the split port swap on the engine before dropping it in my car....a few other upgrades and such....the engine has less then 200k on it (km not miles as it is canadian) .... im gonna be doin alota rebuilding on it...make it a quick little v6...or should i just say screw that and buy a 99+ ????

i would love some input

thanks ahead of time

in my honest opinion you made teh right choice by sticking with your sixer. there is a lot you can do to make it boot down the road. I would deff go with the split port swap (maybe ported heads? ) an 8.8" rear end with t-loc and gears (go with 3.90 or 3.73)
if you have any questions about ur six i'll do my best to help

why not do what i did, go with a 4.2L swap with forged internals and has the stock splitport. would waist a stock to mild 94-95 GT. i've even beat a few 99-04 GT's (no heavy mods) and kept up with a bone stock 01 vette
but i have a fair bit into mine and prob running 350hp est without the nitrous.

best advice is go with the 4.2L and build off that. once you have a decent engine, remember to build (or replace) your rear end, brakes, and suspension.

ya....how much did you pay for your engine ?....and am i still able to use the t-5 tranny from the mustang or do i have to get a new one ?....??? or would all t-5's match up ? and i am doing a lot if not all of the work myself so........what would i need to do before hand for installing a 4.2? besides motor mounts....?

after everything was said and done i spent about 4 grand doing all the work myself.
the T5WC (world class) trans was used in all 94-04 V6 mustangs and 5L mustangs from mid 80's to 95. i believe the final drive gear in the 5L T5WC is different tho.. i'd have to check.
as for prep.. nothing. the 4.2L and 3.8 are VERY VERY simillar only difference is the intake *(you can use the heads/intake off a 3.8), the rods and crank. i know a site with a dedicated 4.2L swap thread and i'll post it up for you. it's a lot of help

well the only reason why mine cost me an arm and a leg is cause all my parts were new forged and built for nitrous. the easiest way is grab an f150 engine

Early 97-98 4.2s had a 2-pc main girdle that connected the 1st to the 2nd main cap and the 3rd to the 4th main cap and had larger main bolts. Mid-1998 and up 4.2s used a 1-pc girdle that only connected the rear 3 main caps and had smaller main bolts.

To use the early 4.2 in any Mustang will require replacing the girdle with a newer 3 main style from a 4.2, get a 99-up 3.8 girdle or just delete it. You will also have to cut the girdle studs sticking out of the head of the main bolts on the 1st main bearing. The 99-00 3.8s used a factory windage tray/girdle that is better than nothing but certainly not ideal. The 01-up 3.8s use the same windage tray/girdle as the 4.2.

Late 00 3.8s are actually early 01 spec engines that are internally balanced. If you have one of these.....just use the notes for an 01-up.

94-98 Single port heads

- 4.2 shortblock
- Single port heads/fuel rail/intake
- Mustang 3.8 water pump
- Auto trans = 4.2 or 01-up flexplate
- 5spd = 01-up or rebalanced 3.8 (0 or neutral) flywheel and a pilot bearing
- Re-use your stock cam position sensor
- 01-up 3.8 oil pan
- 01-up 3.8 oil pick-up tube and screen
- 4.2 damper or 01-up 3.8 damper (use the 01 pulley for blower cars)
- Re-use the stock 3.8 oil pressure sender and tube
- Re-use the Mustang headers
- You can use the 4.2 or 3.8 dipstick. Just keep track of where 5 qts puts the mark when refilling with oil.

94-98 Split port heads

*** You will need to perform all the mods required for a split port conversion plus these steps for the 4.2 (see pbmilan or V6sprout for the video) ***

- 4.2 shortblock or longblock
- You can use the 4.2 heads
- Mustang upper and lower intake
- Custom return style fuel rail (VMP has them)
- Mustang 3.8 water pump
